9.2 Week 9 – Lesson 2 (DISCUSSION)

The question asks who is the more effective leader (Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos), and I think that framing matters: I don’t think there is a “good” or a “bad” leader in general. The effectiveness of leaders depends a lot on the context around them. History makes this plain: someone like Churchill may not have been the right leader outside World War II, but some very controversial leaders have nonetheless been there to bring order or stability in certain situations.

If I followed this logic then I would choose Jeff Bezos as the more effective leader overall. This environment at Amazon required long term thinking, flexibility and creating an organization whose tools could deal with rapid technological change. Bezos was less interested in having all the answers himself and more concerned with establishing mechanisms, teams and a culture that could adapt over time.

Without question, Elon Musk is a visionary force for good and does well operating under fire or innovation (focused scenarios) but his handling the situation is far more erratic and dependent on how closely his personal presence is connected. In sharp contrast, Bezos’ adaptability and system-based leadership has made Amazon resilient beyond the single leader, which, to me, defines effectiveness in the modern workplace.
